Abrasive Blast Cleaning is the use of pressurized abrasive material (such as sand) forced through a hose and propelled at high velocity out a nozzle at pressures ranging from 90 to 110 psi. Abrasive media impacts the desired substrate for the purposes of coatings removal, cleaning or preparing the substrate. Sandblasting can achieve various levels of cleanliness, and when specified Abrasive Blast Cleaning is used to provide a high level of surface preparation and desired anchor profiles suitable for High Performance Coatings Systems. So when it comes to protective coatings, remember, surface preparation is everything. Through the use of Abrasive Blast Cleaning Aulson is able to perform various levels of surface preparation and employ a wide variety of abrasive cleaning medias to obtain the desired or specified surface preparation. Abrasive medias come in a wide range of types and sizes, and can be recyclable or non-recyclable forms ranging sand to steel, or crushed glass to walnut shells. Surface preparation for protective coatings installation is a critical step in the success of the project and requires a high level of Quality Control.
Description: Ultra-High Pressure Water Jetting was utilized for all coatings removal to ensure the cast iron was not damaged during surface prep, and to also ensure the chloride contamination, brought on by the marine environment, was rinsed clean from the surface prior to the application of new coatings. This restoration project required exterior scaffolding to provide access and infrastructure for the installation of protective enclosures required for coatings removal and application. The entire project was serviced through the use of marine vessels, carrying all equipment, manpower and materials to and from the structure which sits atop a rock formation often over taken by ocean swell throughout the day, making the leap to the light, a precarious one.
